It has grown and been nurtured as a vital element of the scholarly publishing landscape and the sometimes thorny issue of access to academic resources.&nbsp; Since establishing a Copyright Officer position in 2008, we have been viewed outside the libraries as leading the university&rsquo;s response to the recent changes in copyright policy.&nbsp; Our dealings with copyright have naturally evolved into an institutional advisory role, as we help weed through this transitional time. As an institution, our copyright strategy has revolved around a system of copyright compliance that involves most of our librarians.&nbsp; This structure is embedded in our liaison role.&nbsp; Front line staff working with course reserves are critical to our system because they are often the first point of contact for course instructors and students.&nbsp; Our overall structure for dealing with copyright issues benefits the library because it recognizes our expertise, enhances collegial relationships on campus, and provides the university with a robust system that has permitted continual reflection and assessment.<br /> In this session, we will discuss our homegrown strategies in the context of our library system, what roles have been taken on and by whom, and how the culture of copyright has blossomed at UNB over the past several years. This session will allow for a sharing of best practices from other institutions in addition to time for Q and A.</p> <fieldset class="fieldgroup group-schedule"><legend>Schedule info</legend><div class="field field-type-nodereference field-field-session-slot"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Time slot:&nbsp;</div> <a href="/content/15-may-1330-1430">15 May 13:30 - 14:30</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-nodereference field-field-session-room"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Slot:&nbsp;</div> <a href="/rooms/slot-c">Slot C</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-nodereference field-field-room-actual"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Room:&nbsp;</div> <a href="/content/328">328</a> </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="fieldgroup group-audience"><div class="field field-type-text field-field-track"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Track:&nbsp;</div> Academic </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> http://apla2013.ca/sessions/library-wide-role-seeding-new-copyright-culture-unb#comments Mon, 11 Feb 2013 20:34:06 +0000 admin 24 at http://apla2013.ca Therapy Dogs, Exam-time Cookies, and Banning Books: Community Engagement in Academic Libraries http://apla2013.ca/sessions/therapy-dogs-exam-time-cookies-and-banning-books-community-engagement-academic-libraries <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-speakers"> <div class="field-label">Speaker(s):&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> lerourke </div> <div class="field-item even"> ncollins </div> <div class="field-item odd"> susan.shepley </div> </div> </div> <p>Canadian academic libraries offer a myriad of services to their communities. These services typically include research repositories, data archives, journal and book publishing platforms, open access author&rsquo;s funds, and faculty outreach around licensing agreements, author&rsquo;s rights, and new models for academic publishing. Many CAUL-CBUA institutions have launched at least one initiative in this area, and are looking for ways to expand their scholarly communications offerings. This paper will present the preliminary results of an assessment performed by CAUL-CBUA&rsquo;s newly formed Scholarly Communications Committee. We will provide an overview of the development of Open Access initiatives and scholarly publishing activities at member institutions, will assess the major challenges facing these fledgling services, and will consider ways in which CAUL-CBUA institutions might work together to continue to develop and promote these new directions. Finally, we will consider the development of Atlantic region Scholarly Communications services in the larger Canadian context.<br /> &nbsp;<br /> Sildes available <a href="http://research.library.mun.ca/1695/">here</a>.</p> <fieldset class="fieldgroup group-schedule"><legend>Schedule info</legend><div class="field field-type-nodereference field-field-session-slot"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Time slot:&nbsp;</div> <a href="/content/15-may-1500-1600">15 May 15:00 - 16:00</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-nodereference field-field-session-room"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Slot:&nbsp;</div> <a href="/rooms/slot-c">Slot C</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-nodereference field-field-room-actual"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Room:&nbsp;</div> <a href="/content/329">329</a> </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="fieldgroup group-audience"><div class="field field-type-text field-field-track"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Track:&nbsp;</div> Academic </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> http://apla2013.ca/sessions/state-scholarly-communications-caul-cbua-institutions#comments Mon, 11 Feb 2013 20:42:03 +0000 admin 27 at http://apla2013.ca Fertilizing a Homegrown Repository: Growing IslandScholar http://apla2013.ca/sessions/fertilizing-homegrown-repository-growing-islandscholar <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-speakers"> <div class="field-label">Speaker(s):&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> dmoses </div> <div class="field-item even"> dhooper </div> </div> </div> <p><a href="http://www.apla2013.ca/sites/apla2013.ca/files/slides/APLA2013_Fertilizing_Homegrown_Repository.pdf">Slides available here</a><br /> In 2012 the Robertson Library relaunched IslandScholar, its Institutional Repository.&nbsp; This presentation will describe how IslandScholar responds to the needs outlined in the institution&rsquo;s Research and Open Access strategies, highlight the features of the new repository framework, describe the repository&rsquo;s workflow and how we seeded our repository, how we address copyright issues, and the growth in content including theses.&nbsp; We will describe how we are preparing our framework to allow LAC to harvest our e-theses.</p> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-slides"> <div class="field-label">Slides:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="filefield-file"><img class="filefield-icon field-icon-application-pdf" alt="application/pdf icon" src="http://apla2013.ca/profiles/cod/modules/contrib/filefield/icons/application-pdf.png" /><a href="http://apla2013.ca/sites/apla2013.ca/files/slides/APLA2013_Fertilizing_Homegrown_Repository.pdf" type="application/pdf; length=2146418">APLA2013_Fertilizing_Homegrown_Repository.pdf</a></div> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="fieldgroup group-schedule"><legend>Schedule info</legend><div class="field field-type-nodereference field-field-session-slot"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Time slot:&nbsp;</div> <a href="/content/17-may-0900-1000">17 May 09:00 - 10:00</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-nodereference field-field-session-room"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Slot:&nbsp;</div> <a href="/rooms/slot-c">Slot C</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-nodereference field-field-room-actual"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Room:&nbsp;</div> <a href="/content/328">328</a> </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="fieldgroup group-audience"><div class="field field-type-text field-field-track"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Track:&nbsp;</div> Academic </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> http://apla2013.ca/sessions/fertilizing-homegrown-repository-growing-islandscholar#comments Mon, 11 Feb 2013 20:42:21 +0000 admin 28 at http://apla2013.ca Cultivating a Sustainable Collections Garden http://apla2013.ca/sessions/cultivating-sustainable-collections-garden <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-speakers"> <div class="field-label">Speaker(s):&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> mbelvadi </div> </div> </div> <p>The University of PEI has developed an innovative approach to managing its collections, especially in the context of difficult decisions regarding budgets. With that in mind, recent initiatives have been undertaken to help foster new partnerships and deploy new technologies in the commons.</p> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-slides"> <div class="field-label">Slides:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="filefield-file"><img class="filefield-icon field-icon-application-pdf" alt="application/pdf icon" src="http://apla2013.ca/profiles/cod/modules/contrib/filefield/icons/application-pdf.png" /><a href="http://apla2013.ca/sites/apla2013.ca/files/slides/APLA session_Comeau and Paon_Learning Commons_May 16_2013_1.pdf" type="application/pdf; length=5483357">APLA session_Comeau and Paon_Learning Commons_May 16_2013.pdf</a></div> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="fieldgroup group-schedule"><legend>Schedule info</legend><div class="field field-type-nodereference field-field-session-slot"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Time slot:&nbsp;</div> <a href="/content/16-may-1330-1430">16 May 13:30 - 14:30</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-nodereference field-field-session-room"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Slot:&nbsp;</div> <a href="/rooms/slot-d">Slot D</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-nodereference field-field-room-actual"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Room:&nbsp;</div> <a href="/content/246">246</a> </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="fieldgroup group-audience"><div class="field field-type-text field-field-track"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Track:&nbsp;</div> Academic </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> http://apla2013.ca/sessions/%E2%80%9Cone-and-one-are-sometimes-eleven%E2%80%9D-local-source-partners-and-technologies-killam-learning-c#comments Mon, 11 Feb 2013 20:47:53 +0000 admin 31 at http://apla2013.ca Effective Advocacy: How do we do it? http://apla2013.ca/sessions/effective-advocacy-how-do-we-do-it <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-speakers"> <div class="field-label">Speaker(s):&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> jthompson </div> <div class="field-item even"> cate.carlyle </div> <div class="field-item odd"> Joanne R. The challenge of declining public funding to libraries of all types has become an overriding concern to all of us, and no library is immune. This session emerges from a series of presentations given over the last decade that suggest the need for libraries to be more disruptive, especially by leveraging open philosophies and technologies. The opportunities to harness disruption (both from within and outside the Library) are significant and libraries need to respond to this opportunity rather than react to the disruption. In one example, UPEI is faced with a 100+% increase in a key journal database: is the appropriate response to cancel the subscription due to cost pressures and leave it at that or are there other options? The speaker will provide updates on efforts at the University of Prince Edward Island and elsewhere, highlight new challenges and opportunities and facilitate a discussion on libraries and change. Come ready to disrupt.</p> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-slides"> <div class="field-label">Slides:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="filefield-file"><img class="filefield-icon field-icon-application-pdf" alt="application/pdf icon" src="http://apla2013.ca/profiles/cod/modules/contrib/filefield/icons/application-pdf.png" /><a href="http://apla2013.ca/sites/apla2013.ca/files/slides/Blowing_Library_Bubbles_2.0.pdf" type="application/pdf; length=11132681">Blowing_Library_Bubbles_2.0.pdf</a></div> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="fieldgroup group-schedule"><legend>Schedule info</legend><div class="field field-type-nodereference field-field-session-slot"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Time slot:&nbsp;</div> <a href="/content/15-may-1500-1600">15 May 15:00 - 16:00</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-nodereference field-field-session-room"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Slot:&nbsp;</div> <a href="/rooms/slot-d">Slot D</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-nodereference field-field-room-actual"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Room:&nbsp;</div> <a href="/content/246">246</a> </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="fieldgroup group-audience"><div class="field field-type-text field-field-track"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Track:&nbsp;</div> Community </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> http://apla2013.ca/sessions/blowing-library-bubbles-ver-20#comments Mon, 11 Feb 2013 20:49:12 +0000 admin 35 at http://apla2013.ca Locally sourced; Globally challenged http://apla2013.ca/sessions/locally-sourced-globally-challenged <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-speakers"> <div class="field-label">Speaker(s):&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> apenner </div> </div> </div> <p>The information age means sharing knowledge with a broad scope and unclear boundaries. Every collection&mdash;whether its shoeboxes of photos, Council records, oral histories or local newspapers&mdash;reflects the unique quality of your community, but digitization projects all have similar patterns and challenges. Atlantic Canadian public libraries are essential contributors to civic life, yet there is a significant gap in the literature concerning the important individuals who work in them. As an increasing number of experienced librarians prepare for retirement, and job descriptions are altered in response to organizational changes and fiscal restraint, the topic of human resource management is of particular importance for public libraries. Our research addresses the gap in understanding through a focused study of human resources using the lens, in particular, of hiring and retention practices.&nbsp; Such practices are impacted by key organizational characteristics, such as administrative and governance structures, collective agreements, employment equity, HR needs assessment practices, training and development budgets, etc.<br /> This pilot study includes an analysis, comparison, and evaluation of human resource policies and practices in different public library systems in Atlantic Canada. We provide insights gleaned from semi-structured interviews with key informants drawn from leaders and human resource managers in public libraries. We frame all of our analyses within the broader context of human resource literature.The session contributes new information pertinent for many types of library, with particular relevance for public libraries, and draws firmly on Atlantic Canadian examples.
