Made in Nova Scotia: a new model for consortial eBook collections

In an effort to overcome some of obstacles related to restrictions of ebooks in consortial catalogues, in the spring of 2012, the Novanet Libraries pooled resources and approached the vendors YPB and EBL to develop a new model for a consortial ebook collection that was accessible to all members of the consortium. This model is the first of its kind, entitled the “Novanet model” is now being used by other consortia in the United States. This session will review the lead up process, discussions that lead to the new models, existing issues/problems, a statistical analysis of the usage by type of user and by institution throughout the project. We will also propose some advice on managing expectations, communication strategies with vendors and best practices as libraries purchase or access more and more ebooks.
